7 Ways to Choose The Right Sports Betting Site

1. Trusted websites

Reading website reviews ensures that bookmakers play by the rules, pay out winners and are fair and friendly with their customer service. If they do not, punters may be forced to contact management officials to outline the problems and apply pressure to have the situation resolved.
Doing your own research is the hardest way to choose a sports betting site. It’s time consuming, and you may find it difficult to get all the information you need. Nonetheless, it’s an approach that you should consider. Just make sure you do it correctly.
Nobody wants a bad experience with any company they do business with, and online betting sites are no different. That’s why punters need to do their homework in advance and find out as much about them as possible. You should ask yourself at least these questions:
1. What deposit options are available? 2. Does the bookmaker offer bonuses for an initial deposit and/or to re-deposit funds into an account? 3. How difficult is it to withdraw money from the account? 4. How many different betting options are offered on the sports gambling site? (For example do they offer in-play betting?)
These are all important questions that need to be answered by the punter before deciding to make a deposit.

2. Read online reviews

Another way to choose where to bet is to read third party reviews online and talk to fellow punters. Online bookmakers with positive reviews on multiples sources, feedback and comments from current customers and your own additional research will help you choose trusted brand.
Each review should contain information including deposit options available, bonuses on offer, sports covered, and various betting options. Thus providing a real insight into what it is like to use the site - ultimately this is what really matters.

3. Website promotions and offers

There are a number of factors that punters need to take into account when choosing a top online bookmaker. Bonuses, free bets and concessions should be at the forefront of punters minds, and they significantly vary by bookmaker. Acquiring bonuses can provide a powerful boost to punters winnings, especially when it comes to those betting for the first time.
Bookmakers are battling with their competitors to offer potential new customers a reason to choose their company over another, so there’s plenty of a choice available before you decide to sign up.

4. Competitive odds and payment options

Most bookmakers are expanding the number of payment methods they offer to clients – however there are huge differences between them. The major European firms have debit/credit cards, e-wallets, prepaid cards, bank transfers, cheques and much more.
Customers in some countries, where there are restrictions may be limited to only using e-wallets (providing a degree of anonymity), and that will dictate which bookmakers they can use.
Furthermore, does the sport betting site have payment security certificates on their websites like Skrill, Trustly, MasterCard or Verified by Visa? And are they using a secure and encrypted https domain?
Obviously, the competitiveness of odds is vital when choosing a bookmaker. Punters want to find the best possible value in their selections. Therefore, having an account with a bookmaker who works to small margins is important. However, more importantly the bookmaker must be willing to lay a decent bet at the odds advertised. There are some bookmakers out there who offer fantastic odds, but when customers try to place a bet on those odds, they are unable to receive the advertised rate. Ensure the bookmaker you choose does not do this by placing a small bet first.

5. What sports do the bookmakers cover?

Betting on football is by far the most popular sport to bet on, and most bookmakers have an expansive betting section for the beautiful game – including live betting. However, plenty of punters have a passion (and expertise) for other sports, and an individual’s preferences for a particular sport can dictate which bookmaker is most suitable for their needs.
For instance, Northern European firms tend to offer odds on Handball, Ice Hockey and Basketball sections as the sports are popular in the region and the bookmakers who compile the odds are confident enough in their knowledge to go against the punters. The major UK websites offer betting on horse and dog racing, but a large number of their European counterparts do not (horse racing markets require significant resources and constant attention as the odds continuously change).
Location also matters within each individual sport as well. For instance, a Chinese bookmaker is likely to have extensive knowledge for Chinese football than a bookmaker operating out of the Caribbean. Therefore the suitability of a bookmaker can depend on its location and where the punter is based.

6. Online customer service is essential

Unlike Las Vegas, where you can physically visit a bookmaker at a casino resort; online gaming sites and sportsbooks are essentially virtual casinos that accept real money to wager on real sporting events. However, this does not mean an online bookmakers address is only located on the internet.
Any reputable online bookmaker will have a physical address located on its website along with contact information you can use to call them and ask questions if needed. Trusted bookmakers will even have an FAQ section you can read to help you feel more comfortable about betting with them.
Another important source you can use to research online betting sites is social media. Every trustworthy site should have a presence on Facebook as a valuable customer service tool. Some sites are active on Twitter and even have different Twitter accounts in different languages.
Following and/or “Liking” the bookmaker enables punters to see how the company communicates and interacts with potential and current customers, giving them another level of trust, integrity and the necessary knowledge needed to make the right decision when the time comes to place a bet with them.
If a bookmaker is very responsive on social media, you can see that they really care about their customers and want to resolve issues in a timely and efficient manner.

7. Help center and support articles

Top bookmakers will have invaluable resources online to empower you to get started. This maybe articles on responsible gaming to a company blog that provides the latest sports betting tips and tactics to maximize your bets.
An online bookmaker that makes the effort on updating a regular blog provides punters with a sustained integrity that disreputable bookmakers do not have.
Blog and help center articles demonstrate to punters not only is there an actual team behind managing the online website, but the bookmaker is professional and knowledgeable in sports and the industry as well. Meaning that you can determine why the bookmaker is offering certain odds based on the topics and expertise written in their blog articles.

Hello, I'm RatherBeYachting and I welcome you to the first of my off-season shit posts.
As per the idea from jkd0002 that received a fair amount of up votes in contest mode to merit posting, with approval from the gracious mods, we will look at Eastern Bloc countries and their college football equivalents.
Why am I qualified for this most sensitive of tasks? As someone born in the Eastern Bloc, who has spent many a summer in the region and has been to a dozen of these countries I feel I could handle this delicate endeavor.
As evidence, here is an old picture of me in a weapons museum next to a missile. This one was suppose to nuke San Francisco!
If I don't mention your program or conference it's solely because I hate your program.
The Now Defunct States
Soviet Union: Alabama. Is there any doubt that this would be the USSR? Alabama has dominated the college football landscape the way the USSR dominated Eastern Europe and Central Asia. The most renowned leaders of Alabama are Paul 'Bear' Bryant and Nick Saban. The Soviet Union was synonymous with bears. As a bonus, Bear Bryant was known for his brutal camps at Texas A&M - as Soviet dictators were known for their brutal camps in Siberia. Nick Stalin has also brought his rivals to their knees, by the college football equivalent of the T-34 tank, the 5-star recruit. Roll Red Tide!
German Democratic Republic: Florida, Florida State, Miami, Washington. You may ask, how can one country be four college football programs? And I'll tell you this is my shit post, and if you're unhappy you're welcome to enter the transfer portal. It's probably not that bad in there anyway, or Tathan would have let us know if it was ass.
The Florida schools: relatively late arrivals on the college football scene, but when going at full strength they are athletically formidable. But we all know the real reason, when you hear the weirdest fucking story it definitely came from either Germany or Florida.
Washington: The East German Olympic team was known for great success and steroid use, much like the Huskies under Don James. Eastern Germany collapsed, the Berlin Wall was torn down, and Washington went 0-12.
Yugoslavia: Southwest Conference. The geographically close conference, like Yugoslavia, was destroyed in the 1990s. Former members wound up in the SEC, Big-12, MWC temporarily, Conference USA, and the American Athletic Conference. Several former members are still feuding.
The Current Nations
Russia: Ohio State. A traditional power which regained their prominence under a man of dubious character. Even when Putin was forced to step aside by term limits he hung around, just like Urban Meyer during his suspension. Ohio State is the biggest program in the Big-10, and despised by their neighbors, just like Russia. Despite the success of the program/country they remain obsessed with their neighbor and old rival.
Ukraine: Michigan. One of the undisputed blue bloods of college football dating back to the days of the leather helmet. Just like Ukraine was the first empire of Eastern Europe as the [Kyivan Rus.](www.historyforkids.net/images/kievanrus.jpg) However, both have fallen from prominence in recent times. Largely as a result of the rise of their aggressive neighbor Ohio State/Russia.
Kansas State: Belarus. Let's get the obvious out of the way, K-State's dictator has left the program, but the similarities are still there. Belarus' leader since 1994, Aleksandr Lukashenko, is often referred to as the last dictator in Europe. He is still in power and there is a high chance of instability if he is no longer in office, a way he clings to power. But wait, the similarities don't end there. The way Bill Snyder had been grooming his son Sean to take over his spot, Lukashenko is doing the same with his youngest son Nikolai. The 'pint sized dictator' accompanies his father to all sorts of events.
Clemson: Lithuania. You may think a basketball school belongs here, but Lil' Ole Clemson is the school that appears to be dethroning Alabama. Much like Lil' Ole Lithuania did to the Soviet Union when it was the first to declare independence. Having scored a victory over the Soviet Union, and a 31-0 win over Russia, Clemson is the clear choice here.
Washington State: Moldova. The poorest country in Europe, just like Washington State is one of the poorest athletic departments in P-5 football. Moldova is an agrarian country, particularly known for their apples and cherries - just like Eastern Washington. The fine students of Wazzu are also known for their alcohol consumption, and Moldova lays claim to being the largest per capita consumers of alcohol.
LSU: Hungary. The Hungarians are an outlier in the Slavic speaking Eastern European world. Their language is part of the Finno-Ungaric family, incomprehensible to Slav speakers of nearby countries who can find commonalities in their languages. Thus, the clear choice is LSU and Coach Orgeron. Előre Tegrisek!
Oregon: Poland. A nation and program that suffered for a long time under the boots of their neighbors, but began a rise to prominence in the 1990s. One of the quickest growing economies in Europe has transformed Poland, much like Nike money has transformed Oregon football. The Ducks record against Ohio State/Russia isn't much different from Poland's record against Russia.
Wisconsin: Czech Republic. Wisconsin loves beer. The Czechs aren't just the heaviest beer drinkers in Europe, they are also the inventors of Pilsner.
Serbia: Nebraska. Once a great power as the dominant force of Yugoslavia, a steep decline in prestige has affected both the Serbians and Cornhuskers. The Nebraska fans are known for their intense passion, Serbians may have got a little too carried away with their nationalism.
Notre Dame: Slovakia. Slovakia is one of the Eastern European countries with a large percentage of Catholics. In fact, during WWII the leader of the country was a Catholic priest named Josez Tiso. As the picture of him with Hitler suggests, Slovakia was a Nazi puppet state. He was executed for war crimes and crimes against humanity, which is a bit different from Notre Dame which hasn't executed great in their past few title game and CFP appearances.
American Athletic Conference: Macedonia. The AAC lays claim to there being a P-6, pissing off the P-5 conferences. Much like Macedonia pisses off the Greeks by using the name of a Greek region. Macedonia has to officially use the name FYROM (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia). The AAC could use some of that flexibility and not be afraid of scheduling a 2-1 series with a P-5 opponent.
BYU: Kosovo. The country with the highest percentage of adherents of Islam, with 96%, is an outlier in a region dominated by Orthodox Christianity and atheism. Much like BYU with it's strict honor code stands out in the college football landscape.
Kansas: Slovenia. Here's your great at basketball country, and your awful at football but great at basketball program. The reigning European basketball champions have gifted us Luka Doncic and Goran Dragic, while Kansas basketball has 29 consecutive NCAA tournament appearances and 14 straight conference championships.
Rutgers: Armenia. Rutgers lays a claim as the first college football program. Armenia claims to be the first Christian country in Europe, having adopted the religion in the year 301. Armenia is responsible for the Kardashians, while Rutgers is responsible for Artur Sitkowski's passing, so we've suffered at both of their hands.
Albania: Butch Jones. The first thing I thought of when I thought of Albania was The Simpsons episode 'Crepes of Wrath' where Albanian foreign exchange student/spy Adil Hoxha stay with the Simpsons. One look at Adil reminded me of none other than the Champion of Life himself, Butch Jones.
USC: Croatia. The former Yugoslav state made it to the finals of the last World Cup, so it's difficult to compare it to the dysfunction that is currently happening at USC. But one look at the Mediterranean style beauty of Croatia will remind you of Southern California. Granted, the country is on the Adriatic Sea and not the Mediterranean, but Clay Helton somehow has a job so things don't have to make sense all the time.
Kentucky: The Republic of Georgia. What, you thought Georgia would be Georgia? Hear me out. Kentucky's Mammoth Cave is the largest cave system in the world at 82 square miles. Georgia is home to the world's deepest caves, including one that is 7,257 feet deep. Spelunk away!
Texas A&M: Azerbaijan. Both of them have oil money. The Aggies coach is in the most expensive in the sport, and his name is Jimbo Fisher. Azerbaijan is on the Caspian Sea, home of Beluga Caviar and the most expensive fishery product in the world. Neither of them is playing Texas.
Oklahoma: Romania. The most famous Romanian of all time, Vlad the Impaler, stuck the heads of his enemies on pikes. Baker Mayfield stuck a flag on Ohio State's field, which is almost the same thing.
Texas: Bulgaria. This was the initial thought, since it's directly South of Oklahoma/Romania. But while trying to find some similarities I found something in Bulgarian history called the Bogomil Heresy, and it was confusing as fuck. Almost as confusing as whether Texas is back or not.
Oregon State: Bosnia and Herzegovina. A brutal war forced many people to flee. You know who else fled from a bad situation? Gary Andersen.
Ole Miss: Uzbekistan. According to the Corruption Perceptions Index, Uzbekistan is the most corrupt country in the former USSR. The choice was clear.
Stanford: Estonia. Known for it's internet freedom laws and online voting, Estonia is a burgeoning place for tech companies. The creators of Kazaa and co-creators of Skype are Estonians. What college comes to mind when you hear internet companies? Those Stanford nerds.
Minnesota: Latvia. Both like hockey? Check. Both have lots of lakes? Check. Plus, one time I got really drunk with some Latvians and they were really nice and I never asked them to say tacos but I bet they'd pronounce it tay-cos.

Russia probe recap: Week of Sept 30 - Oct 6

With the Kavanaugh hearings dominating the news last week, I bet you didn’t think much happened in the Russia probes? Think again - so much happened it’s hard to pick what to recap here. Skip to the end for an abbreviated summary.
HELP: If anyone has some time to volunteer, even an hour a week, to help with something easy but monotonous on my spreadsheet tracking Trump administration firings/resignations, please message me!
I also have a request for you all - I need input. Should I continue the bots, trolls, and fake news pieces (pilot here)? [Self promotion: Which, by the way, exposed the Russian trolls and bots supporting Kavanaugh way before mainstream media picked it up]. Or is there something else you are interested in having me cover? Please give me suggestions if so! If you'd prefer to give anonymous feedback/suggestions, here is a SurveyMonkey link!
Housekeeping:
On to the review...

Week of Sept 30 - Oct 6: What We Learned in the Russia Probe

Mueller investigation

McConnell’s betrayal. While we knew the broad outlines of this story, we now have more details and I think it’s important to remember. Before the 2016 election, CIA Director John Brennan informed U.S. officials including Mitch McConnell that Putin was interfering in the election with the goal of assisting Donald Trump. Not only did McConnell say that he wouldn’t sign on to any condemnations of Russia’s actions, he said if the Obama administration went public he would “all out Brennan as a partisan intervening on behalf of Hillary Clinton.”

Catfishing. In an interesting development, GOP operative and anti-Trumper, Cheri Jacobus, said the investigation of an email hacking/catfishing scheme that targeted her has been forwarded to Mueller. The fact that the FBI thinks Mueller has jurisdiction over this case suggests there may have been foreign government involvement.

Suspicious death. Russia’s Deputy Attorney General, who allegedly directed the foreign operations of Natalia Veselnitskaya, died last week in a mysterious helicopter crash in Russia. Karapetyan was intimately involved in many of Putin’s schemes, including the death of Magnitsky and the investigation into the poisoning of Alexander Litvinenko. He and Veselnitskaya attempted to recruit a high-level Swiss government official, leading to their exposure. Disclaimer: This has not been substantiated yet. Sunday, it was revealed by Moscow journalist Sergei Dorenko that the pilot of the helicopter had two bullet wounds and there is evidence of bullets hitting the blades of the copter. Russian authorities deny these allegations.

Seychelles update. The Russian sovereign wealth fund leader with whom Erik Prince met in the Seychelles, Kirill Dmitriev, “reached out to at least three additional individuals in close contact with the Trump transition team” in the days before Trump’s inauguration. In a communication to George Nader (who is now cooperating with Mueller), Dmitriev wrote of “rebuilding the relationship” between Russia and the U.S., implying “his boss” Putin endorses such outreach.

Clinton’s emails. You may not remember Peter W. Smith - he was the GOP operative who, apparently, killed himself after describing to the WSJ his efforts to track down what he believed to be emails stolen from Hillary Clinton. The WSJ has now revealed Smith solicited and raised at least $100k from donors as part of this effort. Due to the extreme lengths he took to hide his activities, it is not known exactly who made these donations.

Trump’s tax fraud. The reason I’m including this will become clear. The NYT conducted a large-scale investigation (short summary here) into Trump’s taxes and financial records, publishing the result last week: Donald Trump is the result of at least half a billion dollars siphoned off from his dad’s fortune using shell companies, lying about gifts and loans, and “outright fraud.” Far from a ‘self-made man,’ Trump was earning $200k a year by the time he was three years old, $1 million a year after college, and over $5 million a year in his 40s and 50s. “All told, The Times documented 295 streams of revenue [of varying legality] that Fred Trump created over five decades to enrich his son.” Over time, Fred Trump had to give Donald more and more to save him from self-created financial disasters.

The 5th. Randy Credico, a radio show host who Roger Stone asserts was an intermediate to Julian Assange, told the Senate Intelligence Committee he would plead the fifth in response to a subpoena for testimony and documents. Credico has already been interviewed by Mueller’s team and testified for hours before the grand jury.

Stone on the radio. Mueller has reportedly obtained audio of radio interviews between Randy Credico and Roger Stone from 2016-2017. The two “repeatedly discuss” Wikileaks and Credico asks Stone about the back channel to Assange, casting doubt that it exists.

Manafort forfeiting. On Monday, Manafort’s lawyers were spotted entering the building where Mueller’s team works with one of the lead prosecutors, Andrew Weissman. Then Friday, Mueller submitted a court filing requesting an order to seize assets that Manafort bought with money he hid from U.S. authorities. The property includes the Trump Tower condo, a luxury estate in the Hamptons, funds from three bank accounts, a life insurance policy, and an investment account.

More Russian Connections

Russians on reddit. Reddit’s CEO admitted that “suspicious” Russian accounts have been active within the past month on the platform. 953 posts were found and deleted; 264 of which were made to T_D, Donald Trump’s support community.
GRU cyberattacks. The U.S., U.K., and Netherlands have accused Russia of global cyberattacks and plots. The U.S. has indicted seven Russian intelligence officers on charges stemming from the joint investigations.

Russia <3 Kavanaugh. Russian TV propagandist Dmitry Kiselyov, who was chosen for his role by Putin, railed against Kavanaugh’s accusers and women in general last week, similar to Trump himself. Whereas Kiselyov said, “Guess what stands in Kavanaugh’s way? Certainly, the disease of malignant feminism… used to destroy promising careers and eliminate political opponents,” Trump said, It’s a very scary time for young men in America,” but “women are doing great.”
Exploiting white supremacy. A review of social media accounts belonging to the Kremlin’s Internet Research Association (IRA) shows that between September and December 2017 they imitated Americans to inflame racial tensions surrounding the NFL. On the first NFL Sunday of 2017’s season, 60% of the tweets sent by IRA accounts concerned the NFL, taking both sides of the protest argument.

Last Jedi. An analysis by a researcher at the University of Southern California, Morten Bay, found that half of the negative Twitter activity surrounding Star Wars: The Last Jedi was driven by “bots, trolls/sockpuppets or political activists using the debate to propagate political messages supporting extreme rightwing causes and the discrimination of gender, race or sexuality. A number of these users appear to be Russian trolls.”

Congress/States

NY tax probe. Following the publication of the NYT’s allegations of tax fraud against the Trump family, New York state tax officials are “pursuing all appropriate avenues of investigation.” While too much time has passed for criminal charges to apply to the tax crimes described by the NYT, civil fraud charges can still be pressed. For example, the penalty for intentionally underpaying taxes “could include a penalty of up to 75 percent of the unpaid federal taxes and double the unpaid state amount.”

Trump Foundation. While not technically the Russia probe, I think this behavior speaks to general law-breaking that carries over into other parts of Trump's politics. The New York Attorney General accused Donald Trump in a new court filing of engaging in “persistent illegality” in using his charitable foundation “for his personal, business and political interests in violation of federal and state law governing charities." AG Underwood also alleges the foundation coordinated unlawfully with Trump’s presidential campaign.

Nunes’ obstruction. Representative Eric Swalwell wrote an op-ed for the Fresno Bee accusing Devin Nunes of burying evidence on Russian meddling to protect Trump and endorsing his opponent, Andrew Janz. Swalwell states that Nunes plans to selectively release the interview transcripts produced by the House’s Russia probe.

Georgia purge. A coalition of voting rights activists announced they are filing a federal lawsuit against Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp for “using a racially-biased methodology” to remove roughly 700,000 voters from the state’s voter rolls. The group alleges that Kemp did not notify voters before removing them from the rolls. About 1 in 10 eligible voters in Georgia have been affected by the purge.

Bot ban. California’s Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill on Friday banning companies from secretly using automated social media accounts to sell products or influence elections. The ban, which goes into effect July 1, 2019, specifically prohibits people from making a bot that appears to be anything but automated; in other words, “a person using a bot shall not be liable under this section if the person discloses that it is a bot.” Additionally, note this law targets harmful bots - bots used surreptitiously in an attempt to influence commercial transactions or how people vote in elections - not all bots.

Too long; didn’t read section

The U.S., U.K., and Netherlands have accused Russia of global cyberattacks and plots, resulting in the U.S. indictment of seven Russian intelligence officers. Russian state TV and Russian trolls are supporting Kavanaugh and condemning what they call “malignant feminism.”

The Bigfoot's Guide to GoodyearWelt

Having big feet can be inconvenient at times, especially if you’re interested in high quality footwear! I’ve always struggled with finding shoes that fit right, and I know we get a lot of questions about options for bigfoots like myself. I wanted to create this guide as a reference for where to look to meet all of your big shoe needs.
I have a theory that the source of my footwear obsession has roots in my large footedness. My feet were growing so quickly that I wasn’t able to wear a pair of shoes for more than a year. So understandably when I was a kid I/my parents didn’t want to spend money on giant shoes that would be too small in a year. Now that I’m an adult and my feet have stopped growing, I’m able to experience all that I missed out on as a child. If you’re in the same boat, buckle up, because it’s an adventure.
Here are a couple quick guidelines to remember when looking for giant feet:
Know your size!
It’s very important for everyone to be sure of what size your feet are and maybe even more important for a bigfoot. If you haven’t, go get properly measured on a Brannock device. Skip going to Kohls or WalMart and try and make it in to a Nordstrom, Saks, Allen Edmonds, Red Wing Store, or local cobblespecialty footwear shop. They will be able to do a better job and measure your length, width, and arch and get you an exact size. Knowing your true length AND width is crucial.
There’s a good chance you will be very surprised at you’re true size if you’re just getting into quality footwear. Since I was 16, I thought I was a size 16 or 17, because that’s what size basketball shoes I grabbed off the clearance rack. After getting measured, I found out I was truly a 14EEE or 15E. By knowing this, not only will I get a better fit, but I’ve just expanded my footwear options considerably.
Once you know your size and are able to try on some footwear in the proper size, check out a_robot_with_dreams’ guide to How Footwear Should Fit.
Don’t Compromise
Once you know your size, accept the challenge of finding properly fitting footwear. Trying to squeeze in to shoes that are too small can cause permanent damage to your feet, leg joints (ankles, knees, hips), and even your back and neck. I’ve done it before, don’t do it! It’s one thing if shoes are a little snug, but trying to cram your feet into a shoe 2 sizes too small is not good for you or the shoe.
Once you know your size, check out these options. This is by no means an all-encompassing list, but should be a great starting point.
Ready To Wear
These retailers stock large sized (14+) footwear regularly. Some may be easier to find and acquire than others, but these guys definitely make large footwear.
Allen Edmonds – Up to 17EEE – Allen Edmonds is going to be your best friend on your journey to properly fitting footwear. Not everyone is the biggest fan of their styling, lasts, or especially product photography, but they are the largest manufacturer of high quality footwear in the US and offer a wide range of styles in a massive range of sizes. I would avoid buying AE at full retail, unless you fall in love with a pair. Pretty good sales are usually run 2-4 times per year, with the best prices coming during the Anniversary sale in April and the Rediscover America sale in October. They also offer Factory Seconds for sale through the Shoe Bank. These are usually heavily discounted shoes and can range from never worn returns to items with cosmetic defects (never anything that will affect the structural integrity of the shoe). These ship and return free so it’s pretty easy to find a pair with no issues. You have to find a pair you’re interested in on the site, then call any Allen Edmonds location and they can order them for you. Occasionally you can get them to send you a picture of whatever the defect is. The Shoe Bank also runs sales often. Last but not least, there is a healthy used market for lightly worn Allen Edmonds. Check eBay, Grailed, the Styleforum Marketplace or the GYW BST threads for deals.
Alden – Up to Size 20EEEEEE!? – Alden’s can be tough for even the normal footed person to track down and buy. Their best bet is usually a third party stockist, but that won’t work for us. Supposedly Alden has lasts to make up to a 20 6E but since they stopped taking single MTO orders, good luck Shaq. Your best bet as a bigfoot in search of Alden will be calling all of their stores, signing up for their Factory Irregular newsletters at [TheShoeMart](htttp://www.theshoemart.com), or asking third party stockists that run pre orders if they have access to a full size run. I’m signed up for a few sizes on TheShoeMart and get alerts with options (usually loafers) a few times a year.
Chippewa – Up to 14EE – Chippewa is an often recommended entry level work boot manufacturer. You can usually find a decent sale on these if you wait. They stock up to 14EE and tend to run a half size large.
Danner – Up to 15EE – Danner makes a wide range of heavy duty work boots and casual hiking boots. The work boots tend to come in a wider range of sizes. Their most well known casual shoe, the Mountain Light, comes up to a 13EE and usually runs a full size large.
LL Bean – Up to 14EEE – LL Bean is most well known for their Bean Boots, which are available up to 14EE and run a full size large. I would also recommend checking out their Signature line, for affordable and decent quality mocs, loafers, and boots.
Ralph Lauren – Up to 17D – RL shoes can vary greatly in quality depending on the line and the maker. Their online stock is constantly changing and right now is mostly sneakers but they occasionally offer a great value. I own a pair of goodyear welted jodhpurs in snuff suede from them that has held up great, but is no longer available. They have offered a very slim Chelsea (SLP Wyatt alternative) in the past.Only ever buy RL on sale, usually 40% off codes are out there.
Red Wing – Up to 15EE - Red Wing is one of the best known work boot manufacturers for good reason. They have a large market presence, offer a wide range of styles, are made in the USA with leather from their own tannery, SB Foot, and cater to many demographics with good quality and a reasonable price. Popular models include 875, 877, Iron Ranger, and Beckman. Most of their “Heritage Line” is available up to 14D, but there are exceptions. Go to a RW store and get measured, they’re all over.
Thorogoods – Up to 14EE – made by Weinbrenner, these are some of the most affordable MIUSA work boots. Can drop under $100 new with sales. Tend to run half to full size large.
Wolverine – Up to 14D – Wolverine makes more boots in the USA than anyone else. With such a large company, there can be QC issues, but you can usually find seconds or sales to drop them below retail. The 1000 Mile (work styled ‘fashion’ boots) tend to run a full size large.
Made To Order
These makers have the full capability and willingness to make large sized footwear, but only (or usually) only do so on a Made To Order basis. This is a great option for bigfoots, since you’re ensuring a great fit and ordering exactly what you want.
Carmina – Carmina has confirmed that they are willing to make larger sizes than listed for their MTO Groups or through the GYW GMTO’s we have occasionally run. I assume this would apply to MTOs through stockists like Gentry, Tobox, The Armoury, Wilkes Bashford, or Skoaktiebolaget as well. Contact them for more info.
Dayton – Best known for their charcoal nubuck service boot, Dayton makes high quality work boots in Canada. With the weak CAD right now, they offer an outstanding value. A good chunk of their business is single order MTO, and all of their orders are sized individually.
Meermin – Meermin has confirmed that they will make larger sizes for single MTO or their MTO Groups. They do not offer returns on these large sized shoes and must be paid in advance.
New England Outerwear Company – Greg at NEOC is great and accommodating. He is able to offer up to a 14EEE as of now.
Nick’s – Nick’s is one of the big PNW bootmakers. Similar to White’s and Wesco, they make a lot of wildland firefighting boots and have recently expanded into more ‘fashion’ oriented boots that still kick ass. Very accustomed to single order MTO and sizing. It is recommended that you order these through Baker’s for their sizing guarantee and QC.
Quoddy – Quoddy recently expanded their MTO program and is now able to offer up to size 15E. Great MTO program with no upcharge and excellent customer service and sizing help. Top quality hand sewn, Made in Maine.
Rider Boot Company – GYW’s good friend Ron Rider has made custom shoes for NBA players and is capable of doing it for you. He has been willing to do single order MTOs for an upcharge or is able to do large sizes in the GYW GMTOs deusis has run occasionally.
RM Williams – RM Williams makes MTO wholecut Chelsea boots in Australia. They offer up to 14H AUS or 15E US. Some lasts and toes are not available in larger sizes. Check the SF thread for more info and order through Bootsonline or AussieBushHats.
Vass – Vass will create custom lasts or build up existing lasts to fit large size feet. Unfortunately, it seems like you need to travel to their offices in Hungary for this service.
Wesco – Wesco is another PNW bootmaker accustomed to sizing challenges and individual MTOs. I believe they are able to make up to a 17 easily and could go higher with buildups.
White’s – Nick’s ‘older brother’. They make a lot of wildland firefighting boots and have recently expanded into more ‘fashion’ oriented boots that still kick ass. Very accustomed to single order MTO and sizing. It is recommended that you order these through Baker’s for their sizing guarantee and QC.
Bespoke
There are many bespoke makers out there that will hand carve a last based off your exact measurements. Obviously these will fit any size foot but don’t come cheap. Expect to spend at least $1500 for true bespoke boots and likely much more than that.
Sneakers/Casual/Non Stitched Shoes
Gustin – much debated here on GYW, no one has actually seen or handled their “premium sneaker” line, designed to compete with Common Projects, Buttero, etc. They are the only one of those companies, however, to offer up to a size 15.
Clark’s – MFA’s favorite desert boot is available up to size 15 and runs a size large in length and width, fitting up to a 16E.
Bass – Mall level handsewns and loafers, they offer up to a 16D in some models. Quality has greatly declined in recent years, must watch for corrected grain leather.
Doc Marten’s – Resoleability is questionable due to their heat sealed outsole. Quality has also declined. They do offer up to a size 15 UK or 16 US.
Sperry, Vans, Nike, Adidas, New Balance, Puma, PF Flyers, etc. all make large sized shoes, at least up to 16 or so.
I would be happy to answer any follow up questions. Please feel free to suggest any additions that you have run across!

Please help. How William hill stole my money from league of legends bet.

Long time lurker, first time post. I need to get this off my chest or anyone who has thought about sports betting, heed my warning. I'm completely new sports betting myself, but a buddy of my is really into it, and after learning they have esports to bet on, I thought I'd give it a try. I choose williamhill since it was given some decent reviews. After having some success for a month or so, I saw their posted betting lines for lcs matches on July 5th were left open an extra hour for a handful of matches, which basically allowed you some extra time to bet on the match as it was playing out (so you could see who was winning or losing). Could it be a mistake? maybe but why not try. I had bet on 2 matches that day. Team Impulse v Counter Logic Gaming which started at 1pm pst and Gravity v Team Solomid which started at 2pm PST. My first bet was clg. They lost since they were winning but shit the bed. My 2nd bet had won (gravity) and I was stoked. I received my winnings the very next day and thought everything was fine until today. I saw my winnings from the match disappear. I spoke with customer service thru online chat, they informed me due. They stated that due to my bets being late due to their terms and service they voided my winning from the match I won. Copy and pasted from the chat was this in their terms and service
"As per our betting rules, TIME OF ACCEPTANCE: We produce an automated 'no more bets time' for all horse, greyhound and numbers events covered in our full service. Bets are valid if accepted up to this time. Except where prior authorisation is given, single bets accepted after the 'no more bets time' will be void. In multiple bets late selections will be treated as non runners. Where the official 'off' of a race or event is not announced bets are accepted up to the advertised start time. If betting in-play is available bets will stand and be settled at the current in-play price at the time the bet was struck. Where betting in-play is not available any bet that is inadvertently accepted after this time will be void, unless we are satisfied that the bet was placed before the actual start of the event, except in the following circumstances: on a golf event up to 15 minutes after the start time; a football match up to 15 minutes after the start time, provided there has been no goals scored or players sent off and any of the following sports events up to 5 minutes after the start time: American Football; Baseball; Basketball; Bowls; Cricket; Cycling; Darts; Gaelic Football/Hurling; Ice Hockey; Rugby; SnookePool; Speedway; Tennis."
Fine I get it, your system fucked up and allowed me to bet and you decide you can change the rules anytime, say the bets were late and void everything. Here the strange part. I asked them when they decided the cut off time for the match for the tsm vs gravity was. 22:00 uk time (2pm PST) I posted my bet 2:44pm (cause they system had line up till 3pm that day). The cut of time for clg vs tip? was exactly the same 22:00 uk (2pm PST)!!. How could there be 2 exact same cut off times?? Knowing their site they always have matches sperated an hour apart for every single lcs match for last 4 weeks. And lcs has never played matches concurrently. Could it have been that other ppl were knowingly taking advantage of their system error that day, and either betted on clg and lost so they decided to keep the winnings, but people who bet on the tsm vs gravity game, clearly they company made a loss and decided to reverse their winnings? Anyways after spending 3 hours with customer service I was done. I'm wary to continue using william hill, and sports betting in general.
TL:DR: William hill put up betting line for an extra hour for a handful of bets due to some strange error. voided all bets on some matches (tsm vs gravity) , did not void bets on upset matches. (tip vs clg) Took my money!! Based on their own rules they decide.

Questions Answers
Did you see that ludicrous display last night? I assume u are talking re Arsenal. yes, yes yes. Not as gut-slamming bad as Saturday's disaster against Blackburn, but no fun for sure.
What was the most surprising facet of the story that you discovered? I was shocked at the Amazonian river of money that sports betting generates... the Interpol chief Ron Noble says several billion euros a year, an ex-FIFA official has said up to $500 billion a year. BILLION...! if you are a criminal mastermind, all you have to do is use some fixed games to deliver a tiny sliver of that and you will be wealthier than you ever imagined. That's about the yearly GNP of Switzerland, no slouch economy.
This is the crazy thing to me, how many people are betting on what are ultimately not high level events. I would like to think that high levels of betting on one side of a small matchup could be observed and regulated. Until lately, no one thought to look for match-fixing in the soccer wilderness. but extremely low level games in Finland, Norway and Canada that were fixed proved that theory wrong. for fixers, best thing is virgin territory not already claimed by other fixers...
Which mobs were most involved? Turkish? Russian? Romanian? Prolly the shorter list would be what mobs DON'T want to get involved with match-fixing... AP talked to Turkish commentators who said fixing allegations have cropped up every year for at least 40 years, and even Turkish prosecutors in court documents noted that mobs had infiltrated Turkish soccer since at least 1980... As for Russia, one illegal Asian betting den that an AP reporter visited wouldn't even touch bets for Russia's 2nd division (or Greece's for that matter). Even illegal sites know when to run! Italy's match-fixing has produced over $2.6 billion for the Camorra and the Mafia. And since the vast majority of sports betting money originates in Asia, Asian crime gangs are said to be intimately involved in fixing games.
Where in Asia is the money coming from? It's coming both from billions of small bettors (betting is a way of life i many Asian countries) and from Asian crime gangs who are recycling dirty money to launder it.
How is the research going on the dinamo zagreb - olimpique game, where olimpique scored just enough goals to kick Ajax out of the champions league? Ah yes, where a zagreb player winked on a YouTube clip. plenty of suspicions, Ajax started howling immediately, no good evidence ever emerged. was about the same time in which Croatian first league (where dinamo played) was riddled with match-fixing (see our story about Croatia Seveste player Mario Cizmek) but dinamo never implicated in those trials.
To borrow from Grantland's Brian Phillips, "How #*%!ed is the beautiful game?" It's more &&#$ than top officials want to publicly admit. There are large areas of the world where football has been not only infiltrated by criminals but is being run by criminals. Last year in China, two ex-chiefs of its FA (football association for American fans) got 10 1/2 years in prison for corruption. In 2011, the national TV channel in China REFUSED to broadcast matches from the Chinese League due to widespread match-fixing. I can't imagine the reax here in London if Sky or the BBC refused to broadcast Premier League games...
What is the highest level that you believe some form of match fixing has taken place? European competition? WC qualifying? Where is match fixing most prevalent? Well, our FIFA correspondent Graham Dunbar says that depends if you include the 1982 World Cup West Germany-Austria game, which appeared to be a deal with the teams. FIFA changed its rules after that so games at the end of rounds start simultaneously. More recently you have the 2010 WC qualifier between Liechtenstein and Finland ... and Latam types will always debate whether the WC 1978 Argentina 6, peru 0 was fixed, sent host Argentina into final...
So...Juventus. As a fan, I just have to know. How involved are they in match fixing? They're always surrounding by rumors of it. Hmmm. where to start? well, going way back, juventus reputedly bough the ref in the 193 European Cup semifinal, according to one of our top football guys... and they were pretty front and center in Italy's 2006 match-fixing scandal, where they were regulated to Serie B (2nd division), got 9 points deducted, got hit by a massive fine, got stripped of their 2006-07 league titles, got tossed out of the Champions League for a year. Their club president at the time was fined and banned from the sport for five years. Their current coach, Antonio Conte, just got back in December from a 4-month FIFA ban for a separate match-fixing allegation. As Premier Mario Monti said, maybe Italian football should just shut down for a few years to get rid of that corruption thing...
I have to ask. Have you or anyone in your agency been approached or threatened as a result of your investigations? Gotta give kudos here to Chris Brummett, our Vietnam bureau chief, who visited a Wild West betting boomtown on the border of Cambodia. Going around illegal Asian betting dens, talking with bettors about fixed matches, looking for hints of Asian triad involvement. Not a place that you could take TV cameras or where bettors would let u take a picture, that's for sure. And when I was filming a TV segment at a Zagreb stadium with a player convicted of match-fixing, all of a sudden we saw that a photog with a long lens was zooming in on us. The guy came over to see what we were doing, I made sure not to speak a word of English and our photographer Darko talked to him. After that, Darko said "it's time to go." When a photog who just got back from Syria says its time to go, u go.
Do you think that this type of match fixing also extends into American sports such as Major League Baseball or the National Football League? I think of a game like the Super Bowl with all the money bet on it and I can't help but wonder if games are often fixed or the outcome affected artificially. Super Bowl betting is big in the US but is tiny in relation to global soccer betting. And the Super Bowl has one big thing that keeps it from being fixed -- very high player salaries. Players in countries like Croatia are match-fixing sometimes for as little as 2500 euros ($3300). Major league baseball salaries and NFL salaries are too high -- and you need to involve too many players to ensure a rock-solid fix. In soccer, the goalie alone has enough influence to fix a game by himself.
Where do the criminal gangs get the action on? Betfair? For a blow-by-blow account of how it all goes down, check out these links: Player who rues getting involved in match-fixing: Link to apne.ws Unwritten rules of match-fixing: Link to apne.ws
How exactly does it work? The players just play terribly when instructed? The criminals have money on the over? In terms of the betting, there's about five-six levels of betting in Asia, which leads from local illegal betting shops that deal in cash to next level, regional betting houses, still in cash, to next level, super betting sites, to online betting sites that take credit cards and are openly operating. Asian betting sites don't know their customers, so its easier to disguise large wagers as many small ones. European betting sites know their customers via credit cards, but criminals can use fake credit cards. anyone who knows about a fixed game can bet on whichever betting site offers the odds
Where are most of these criminal organizations based? What country? Are international matches ever fixed(England vs San Marino or something) or just club matches? Actually 'friendlies' between two nations are a prime target for fixers, because football associations can hire agencies (some of which later turn out to be fronts for fixers) to arrange the games and give a cut of the proceeds (or even bribes) to corrupt FA officials Just imagine, in a friendly you can get world-class talent for free and they can generate gobs of TV revenues. some suspect friendlies in recent times: Nigeria-Argentina 2011, one or more South Africa friendlies right before the World Cup, Bolivia-Latvia 2011, Bulgaria-Estonia 2011, several Latam games involving Venezuela and Bolivia. These are all men's games, so far no whiff of suspicion among women's friendlies.
Is there any suspicion of fixing in women's soccer in the past Olympics? It has bothered a lot of people the way the gold medal game finished. It didn't make any sense at all. Edit: I did mean semi final. My bad. No, so far no reports of match-fixing in any women's games. in fact, some of the bettors AP interviewed in the illegal Cambodian den were at the time betting on live women's U-20 game between New Zealand and Japan just because they felt it was not fixed.
Has there been any instances when you had suspicion BEFORE a match? What do you think about the recent EUROPOL expose about the 380 european matches? What does only 1 english match (liverpool v debrecen)(albeit english team not involved) say about how things are done in uk v thing elsewhere.what is it that they are doing right/others doing wrong? Me and another AP reporter have visited a betting monitoring site that runs 31,000 games thru computer models to see if they may be fixed. Companies like that can often see if games are suspicious up to two days before a match _ ie they know if XXX amount bet on a Italian league game is normal or way off. They also keep tabs on 110,000 players, teams, refs and officials and give them match-fixing credit scores... they have seen where a suspicious player changes teams and infects a previously untouched team with his knowlege of fixing... Only one match in England reflects high premier league salaries that protect the players and the game. But bet monitors do have one person on their top 20 'to watch' match-fixing suspicions list that lives in the UK.
What is the best part about your job? The sheer variety. I mean there are some things we can plan for _ we know when the 2012 London Olympics will start _ but you never know each day what will happen. Will an Icelandic volcano erupt and blow the travel plans of 10 million people to bits? Or maybe a meteor will hit Russia? i am constantly amazed.
How has the series been received by soccefootball officials? It seems to expose some dirty laundry and gotten news and TV pickups across the globe. Yes, we were very happy with the wide range of media that picked up the stories _ everything from papers in Thailand to ESPN and Sports Illustrated to non-sports outlets like Huffpost and Salon.com.
Which team do you support and who is your favorite player? Well, i live and work now in north London, so i would be crucified if I didnt keep up with Arsenal (condolences will be accepted here today). Favorite player, hmm. got two. Fernando Torres because i was living in Zurich during Euro 2008 (he was electric then) and he looks just like my hubby did years ago with his freckles; Robin van Persie now because the man just dances on the field, a joy to watch.
Fernando Torres is my favorite too, and believe me he will be electric again! and another question, what is the most memorable match you have ever watched live at a stadium? At a family level, I brought my ten-year-old daughter and her soccer team to see the American women play at Giants stadium in NJ when the US hosted the Women's World Cup in 1999... Mia Hamm and her buddies really inspired a generation.
Do you see any problem/conflict with betting companies (such as Bwin) being significant sponsors of the game? Betting companies are always going to advertise next to matches, its the smart operating model for their business. but it is interesting how they can be in severe denial about match-fixing. I went to a London betting conference in Nov, and a top representative from Ladbrokes insisted to me that 'maybe 5-6' games were fixed a year. he claimed that some betting monitoring companies have an incentive to say there are hundreds of possibly fixed games a year just so they would get contracts from FIFA, UEFA, national leagues. On the other hand, his own industry has a HUGE interest in not talking about fixed games -- who is going to bet if they think things are fixed? he did me a big favor though - AP reporters could not get into the monitoring sites until we reported his ludicrous comment to them.
How does it start? Does someone from the criminal organization approach a player in a shady alley? Do players that fix games do so repeatedly? Do multiple players on a team need to be bought to pull off the fix? And finally, how do the criminal organizations actually make money off fixed games? Presumably by placing the bets they've arranged, but don't the people taking their bets get suspicious? What i'm going to do is give u some link to our stories that explain all this. ironically, match-fixers often groom players just like pedophiles groom targets, according to a major 2012 study on sports corruption. Players can be seduced into fixing by other coaches or players or agents. Or they can be ordered to fix by their corrupt soccer club bosses. Or they can have no idea a game is fixed because the refs were bought off instead. so many ways to match-fix...!
How in the world would FIFA (or possibly another organization) go about fixing this or at least starting to fix it? Is the problem already too deep that anything other than a complete scrub of all teams and parties involved would fail? And could the sport even survive something like that or would it be best for the game if everyone just operated like business as usual? FIFA's latest anti-match-fixing project is to educate players and refs about the problem. A noble idea, for sure, one that no one can find fault with. but it's kinda like warning your kids not to play with matches when your kitchen is already on fire and that may burn down your whole house. Time to get out the big firehose. Let's not forget how doping has driven sponsors and TV revenues away from cycling or even track. And soccer authorities also have another problem -- their own officials may be the ones driving the fixing. A major sports corruption report last year even gave that a label "chairman-to-chairman" fixing. in turkey last year, 93 people went on trial for match-fixing, and only 14 were players. I think the best model to emulate is germany's, its FA has a omsbudman where players, refs, anyone can call to report fixing worries anonymously.
Is it anyway connected to the fixed cricket games and why is this not getting as much coverage considering soccer is a much larger sport? And do you think the Ireland v France world cup 2010 qualifier was fixed, where Thiery Henry blatantly hand-balled to knock Ireland out of the competition? That was one darn obvious handball but absolutely no suggestion of fixing in that. as we say in our Dirty Game series, referees and players can perform poorly for all sorts of legitimate reasons. Gotta say, American fans could never stomach bad ref calls like that, that's why they love NFL instant replay. the concept that such a bad call could knock a team out... it's why the NFL had to end its referee lockout...
It's amazing how deep seeded the corruption is in the sport. Do you know how much money was made globally from the match fixing (an estimate)?? FIFA has estimated between $5 billion and $15 billion a year. not chump change.
I think it's more spot-fixing than match-fixing, right? Or at least the higher up the leagues go, the more it deviates towards spot rather than match. If you got any knowlege of this, let FIFA/UEFA/the national leagues know. AP took a deep dive into fixing in Croatia's first division, (let me tell u google translator is a mess with croatian court transcripts) and found both match and spot fixing in the same games. one sports expert, David Forrest of University of Salford, says that's a great way for gangs to increase revenues, you get to place two-three-four bets on the same fixed game.
Do you think that the punishment for participants should be more severe the further up the ladder the investigation goes? That is, should the first-year first-teamer found to have been involved be given less of a penalty than the national team star? Or should a message be sent with uniform penalties for even the least involvement? Hmm. it's kinda like doping in that you need zero tolerance. That said, its clear that match-fixers target players like lions on the savannah, picking off the young (easy to manipulate) the old (nearing the end of their employment, fearing what's next) and the weak (those with betting problems or financial difficulties. Young players lured into fixing by older players should get lesser sentences if it's found that they were forced or pressured into it. Older players (or refs hitting age limits) should get harsher penalties because they absolutely knew what they were doing. national stars who fix bring shame upon an entire nation but the fixing penalities should be the same no matter what the league.
Do you feel like, historically, there has been more corruption in Italian leagues, or is it more a matter of the Italian investigations being more frequent and successful in revealing the corruption and making cases stick? There's no question that Italy has had repeated, major match-fixing instances at least since 2005. And each case seems to bring new amazing allegations. My all time favorite is the goalie who wanted to fix a game, so he drugs the water bottles of his teammates to play poorly. they stink, lose the game, and one even crashes his car afterward. Since Italy takes drunk driving quite seriously, the driver gets a blood test which shows he is full of sedatives, and the whole fixing operation is unveiled. can't make this up. I give plenty of kudos to Italian prosecutor Roberto Di Martino but the country has had plenty of corruption issues in all walks of life ... , so i dont think we can just credit good prosecutors for us hearing about italian match-fixing
At what point do you as an organisation decide that you will look into that matter. How did this all start - or better yet, what event triggered this investigation? We noticed that AP was doing about a dozen match-fixing spot stories around the world a month... but it was country by country. This trial, that arrest, this investigation. It was time to look at the whole of the sport, something that fits an international news agency better than a local or national paper. I had been interested in match-fixing since i covered FIFA for AP in 2007-2008 and did a story when they first set up their EWS monitoring site. got promoted to London, distracted by volcanos and a wonderful London Olympics, but began interviewing people last june.
Glad to oblige blatter? justkidding. What i should have said yesterday -- this AMA is about match-fixing, not Blatter. Blatter is such a vast topic that he needs a whole 'nuther forum. Maybe ask him to come on himself.
How do you stop match fixing? Whoever figures that out gets a nobel peace prize.
Do you have any knowledge of match fixing in Latin America? Specifically Libertadores Cup and Brazilian and Argentinian national leagues? Bolivia and Venezuela have had several suspicious friendlies, Guatemala had 3 players banned in recent months for fixing.
What do you have to say about one of the most outrageous things that happened in the last decade: Lyon 7-1 Zagreb leaving Ajax out of CL? Everyone seems to have forgotten about that thing and no one ever really talked or investigate that game further. That is certainly the one game that Europeans came away thinking must be fixed. it would be a great subject for a magzine piece. maybe when everyone in that game has retired, more might come out.
Which league do you believe to be the most corrupt? Even if it isn't one you've investigated. Impossible to say. too many candidates.
My dad used to bet on soccer matches with his buddies frequently, and pointed out how he would know if a match is fixed or not depending on the players' reactions during a penalty kick. Apparently, whenever a player looks backwards before taking a penalty, he is always looking for a signal as to whether or not he is allowed to make the goal. Is there any merit to this conspiracy theory that my dad and his friends developed? Wild theory, too bad it's prolly not true -- they must have been drinking pretty heavily! If a game is fixed by players, they know beforehand and they know exactly what marks they need to hit: X-X score at halftime, X-X final result, X goal differential. No need to look over their shoulder, they already know if they should make it or not. If the game is fixed by club officials, they have already told their players what to do. If the game is fixed by referees, often players don't even know. They might think it's a ridiculous penalty call but they are not going to hurt their stats, they are going to try to make the penalty.
Who's going to win the European Cup? Going to leave all game analysis to commentators and Match of the Day boys. I'm just all about corruption.
Are there times when two different groups try to fix a match with conflicting goals? This was a significant problem in Asia, and its a terrible business model when two crime gangs are trying to fix the same game. That propeled at least Asian gangs to seek out more European games, which were considered several years ago to be much cleaner. One monitor told me about a match in which his company's spotters at the game saw thugs from two different crime gangs shouting with the ref at halftime. Only one side won. (think the ref in that case had a death wish or was just blinded by greed)
What is the most common betting market on fixed games? A straight win? or something like over 2.5 goals? Or even corners or number of cards? Do you bet on any games? I don't bet on sports, not after seeing all this...! The most common bets on fixed games are four things: final score, half-time score, total number of scores and score differential. who is taking the corner doesnt bring in enough money...
Where does the actual money the gangs win come from? Is straight from the betting agencies pockets? David Forrest, the UK economist who specializes in sports betting, tells us that fixed sports betting is a fabulous way to launder money. You take cash from drug or trafficking operations, you bet on fixed games, not only do u make a profit but dirty money comes back clean. He says some crime gangs are trying to buy soccer clubs just to launder money through them.
Was the Qatar bid for hosting the 2022 world cup involved in bribery of any kind? Sri, this AMA is on match-fixing. The FIFA decision to give the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar respectively is a whole separate (and vast) discussion.
Did your investigation have any overlap with Declan Hill's investigations in the past? Declan is a pioneer, kudos to him. Suggest everyone interested in this topic read his book "The Fix: Organized Crime and Soccer"
a comment: Kudos to you and your team for really doing some real investigative journalism. Too much TMZ-style or reactive news these days so it's refreshing to see some real shit. Second my question: I saw the amount of profit gained from this scheme was a seemingly paltry $11m. In 2012, $94m was bet on the Super Bowl alone. Is the $11m as truly insignificant as it appears? What percentage of the pie is legitimate vs illegitimate? You maybe are just looking at one Italian match-fixing investigation. Multiply that by investigations in 50 nations last year, add to it all the bribe money that is linked to organizing friendlies that can generate big TV revenue... the point about match-fixing is not illegal or legal betting. It is tainting all betting with a fix. European betting agencies pride themselves on their legality, but anyone can be undermined by a fix. In asia, illegal gambling dens thrive because gambling in an ingrained cultural habit that is going to occur even if govts ban it.
Does this only happen with football? are there stories of match fixing happening in the European basketball, volleyball, handball, water polo leagues? All sports can be vulnerable to match-fixing, especially if there is betting on them. add tennis, cricket, horse racing to that mix.
I don't really understand soccer but how and what makes a game suspicious? Huge amounts of late bets on an obscure game. In-game live betting in which lots of bettors put money on another goal and the referee orders a penalty for an unfathomable reason. Games in which all scoring is due to penalty kicks. Games in which scoring is so high that it looks more like baseball. Games in which many goals are disqualified for offsides. so many options i just cant list them all
Does anyone know if Domenico Cricito is still being investigated or if they've finished with him? Cricito, an Italian defender who plays for the St. Petersburg club Zenit, was cleared, not charged with any match-fixing. He has said that he's trying not to be angry but still is about how he was dropped from the Italian team playing in Euro 2012 due to allegations that turned out to be unproven.
How are investigations going in regard to serie a? i know the mafias in Italy have a lot of control over players and referees. Big break on Thursday (feb 21, day after this AMA). a top suspected fixer was arrested by Italian police, Admir Sulijic. he reportedly has links to singapore money man Dan Tan. --- Big break on Friday, Dan Tan being interviewed by Singapore police!!!
Is there a chance Chelsea has been involved with match fixing please say no? I'm such a cynic that I can't say 'No' about any team. To paraphrase Donald Rumsfeld, that's a 'known unknown' -- we know there are some things we do not know. that applies to all teams, not just Chelsea.
Have there been any murders or serious crimes committed in the name of covering up max fixing? In Bulgaria, over a dozen soccer officials have been slain over the last decade. and the crime gangs there don't even pretend to make it look like an accident, they just gun people down in the street.
Due to the nature of your work, do you ever feel in danger? Our medical writer tells us that sitting at a computer for hours on end is the most deadly thing for reporters. if she's right, we are all doomed.
Which top leagues would you say are the least corrupt? Certainly the premier league, due to the players' huge salaries.
Why do FIFA or UEFA never step in to take action on the obviously corrupt English FA, more specifically, Referee's decisions going heavily in the way of a certain Alex Ferguson? There is plenty of evidence, but you just leave them to get away with it. Why? Gotta say, FIFA and UEFA are clearly not fans of the English FA and are certainly not favoring them in any way re refereeing decisions.
I like how this question is dodged. Glad to oblige.
Please tell me the Celtic v Barcelona game wasn't fixed! I have to be sure... Hey even amazing teams lose sometimes! Plus this doesnt match the typical M.O. of the most successful match-fixers. When great teams lose, it always raises more suspicions among bet monitoring companies than when bad teams lose (our reporters visited some secret betting monitoring sites). A convicted midfielder who talked to us about match-fixing says it's always better to simply have bad teams lose once again -- criminals just pre-determine HOW MUCH that team will lose by and play those odds.
Whoever figures that out gets a nobel peace prize. Sri don't mean to be flippant. You go for zero tolerance, you establish anti-match-fixing officials in every national league, you teach players and refs and soccer officials how to recognize approaches by fixers, you increase criminal penalities for fixing, you don't stop investigating serious allegations just because a referee has retired 'from the football family,' (FIFA) you protect whistleblowers better. Italian defender Simone Farina told police about being approached by a fellow player to fix, and that effectively ended his playing career and made him a pariah in italy...happily months and months later Aston Villa made him a 'community coach'
No question, but thanks for doing what you do. This kind of high quality investigative journalism is what the free press is all about. Very kind to hear. are we related? jk. hope you got a chance to read, watch or hear all the eight Dirty Game stories, three sidebars, online video, broadcast video, radio reports, etc.
What's amazing is how ESPN hasn't said a word about this yet. Because they'd rather show more Tim Tebow praying coverage, or Mark Sanchez picking his asshole coverage, or LeBron James changing shampoo types coverage, or Erin Andrews trimming her fingernails coverage. ESPN online did pick up the AP Dirty Game story... and they did a video piece after Europol cited 680 suspicious games. but on that video piece they got an Italian soccer commentator who thought this was being overblown...
Could you please investigate the NBA now pls. Hmm. I saw an NBA rep at the London conference on sports betting. the major difference, obviously, is the huge number of scores in basketball and low number of scores in soccer. 1-0 wins a soccer game, but you need what, 35-50 scores to win an NBA game? So many more scoring variables in the NBA and such high salaries. I would think college ball (no salaries) would be much much more vulnerable to spread fixing.
I am Sheila Norman-Culp, AP’s Assistant Editor for Europe, who led the AP's “Dirty Game” multiformat team that investigated match-fixing in football. FTFY. Ahh, you say football, i say tomato. Let's call a truce. Otherwise Americans in this chat will start talking about Alabama
